Compass Box 5 Flavor Combo
Asyla – Clean as the nose suggests. Soft vanilla, steel cut oats, powdered sugar, lemon. None of the flavors are competing for attention. Well balanced and delightfully subtle.
Oak Cross – Sweet and spicy off the bat. Ground black pepper, honey, and then a full load of ginger spice. This ramps up late in the palate and into the finish. Continued spicy ginger that virtually overpowers the burn. Burn is of medium intensity and relatively short. Lingering notes of black licorice candy. Very dry.
Peat Monster – Sweet, spicy, warm, and peaty. Sea salt, nougat, peat smoke, vanilla cream. Oily and soft mouthfeel. Long and smokey finish.
Spice Tree – The cookie spices remain standing out in front, supported by a woody tinge. The peppery spiciness of the whiskey came to me as only just a hint at first, but grew into a more noticeable presence right up to the finish. The finish is big, warm, and has a bit of a spicy kick to it.
Hedonism – Sweet shortbread cookies, peppercorn, oak, and the lime zest returns. The softness continues mingling with prickliness on the back end, which reads far more suggestively than I had intended. The burn shows up late on the palate and leads into the finish. A nice amount of spice in the finish, specifically cinnamon and cayenne pepper, with a flash of mint with a subtle but lingering burn. Very clean from the nose through the finish.
